Request for SD INBRE Developmental Research Project Program (DRPP) Full Proposals

2026-27 Grant Year

Phase II: Mentored Proposal Preparation

Mentor assignment: After the Winter Research Conference, the DRPP Director will work with applicants to identify external mentors. All faculty selected for a full DRPP proposal in the upcoming grant year must have an external mentor that has experience in research and a track record of extramural funding. The DRPP Director will reach out to mentors to discuss both participation in this program and expectations of the mentor. Mentors will receive compensation as consultants as they meet with the DRPP applicant and assist in developing research projects that will be appropriate for both DRPP and external funding.

Mentor plan: The DRPP Director, the external mentor, and the DRPP applicant will outline a mentorship plan and timeline that aligns with the funding mechanism (PP, RP-1, or RP-2). The detailed mentorship plan will be included as a required component for the application, and mentors will be responsible for providing the DRPP Director with notes from all meetings with the DRPP applicant. The DRPP Director will meet annually with mentors to discuss both the notes from meetings with DRPP applicants and the overall relationship with their mentee. An official report of this meeting will be drafted by the DRPP Director, approved by the mentor, and submitted to the NIH as part of the DRPP annual report. This process of meeting and drafting reports for

the NIH will be the same for both the pre-award and post-award mentoring periods.

Full Proposals Due on or before April 30, 2026 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time: Late applications will NOT be accepted
